Good deal as PBX server?

Can you use it to build PBX or webhosting server?  It seems worth to try,  just at $100-120 even it’s refurbished one.

However, you should consider below factors before buying one from eBay.

Lucky?

It always depend on how lucky you are. Please understand that refurbished one is absolutely not a brand new, warranty is very limited and usually not by manufacturers.

Good Luck!

Technical Challenges

1.OS:

Dell Wyse 5470 comes with Dell own OS, also linux, but just as light-weight nettop.

2. BIOS:

The Bios was locked by password. If you want to boot from USB drive to install other Linux, you have to unlock the motherboard first.

Two options:

  • Password:  many people mentioned the default password was “fireport”, but this password might be changed, so you’d better to confirm this with the seller.
  • Reset bios by removing motherboard battery.

3. Upgradable?

  • DDR4 RAM slot x 2
  • M.2 SSD slot x 1

RAM and storage seem upgradable on Dell Wyse 5470,  but this issue also needs to be confirmed this issue with the seller.

How to build a PBX server by FreePBX?

In order to install Linux OS on this machine, you need to enter BIOS to boot from USB drive.

  1. Download ISO file of  Linux you like.
  2. Write ISO file to USB drive by Rufus
  3. Boot from such USB drive, and follow instructions to install CentOS to internal disk or external USB drives.
  4. Then install PBX on Centos, Ubuntu or Debian by Free official tutorials

***As CentOS 8 was not supported from Dec 31, 2021, we have to use the clone OS instead. such as AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux. CentOS 8 stream should be OK, but don’t forget it is “upstream”.
