What is the best replacement of CentOS Linux for PBX?

Some popular IP PBX servers or system are developed from CentOS Linux, such as install FreePBX, Issabel, some dead projects like Elastix ( not the one under 3CX now) and Tribox.

Many people preferred CentOS to build Linux server, because:

  • Free
  • Stable
  • Long-term support
  • Almost same (Rebuilt) as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Large-scale community
  • Good community support

As CentOS promised to support CentOS 8 to 2029 in the past, many Linux servers were migrated from CentOS.

Unfortunately, CentOS 8 would be at the end of 2021 after Red hat acquired CentOS.

Although Red hat provided an upstream version: CentOS 8 stream, a few servers will use it as production.

Is there the replacement for CentOS?

Paid version:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

If your budget is sufficient, RHEL is the first choice for your Linux server. You can benefit from instant system update, better security and official support.

The most importance is that you don’t need to learn other Linux.

The procedure of installation is same as CentOS for FreePBX and FusionPBX

Free options:

  • Ubuntu
  • Debian
  • FreeBSD
  • Fedora

Lots of servers are installed above Linux and have been running very well.   They are free and very suitable for budget-limited companies or geeks.

The biggest disadvantage is that they are not “CentOS”,  you have to take time to learn and debug. Sometimes some packages may not same as the one in CentOS.

What is the best replacement of CentOS Linux?

Of course, it’s Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), but not free.

Is three free alternative one?

Yes.  There are two free Linux distros:

Rocky Linux

AlmaLinux

What is the best replacement of CentOS Linux for PBX?

  • AlmaLinux is a free and open source Linux distribution, created originally by CloudLinux to provide a community-supported, production-grade enterprise operating system that is binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • The first stable release of AlmaLinux was published on March 30, 2021.[1]
  • Support 64-bit PC  and ARM64

In short

  • You should select Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to ensure the system security and technical support
  • Both Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are great, but these two Linux rely on the long-term investment from sponsors, their futures are still not so clear, so it would be risky if running heavy and long-term tasks on server.
